2009-10 Season
With the 10th overall pick in the 2009 draft, the 49ers picked Texas Tech WR Michael Crabtree and traded their only 1st round pick to the Carolina Panthers for a first round pick in 2010. The rest of the draft the 49ers picked Alabama RB Glen coffee, Pitt ILB Scott Mckillop, Ball State QB Nate Davis, Fresno State TE Bear Pascoe, LSU FS Curtis Taylor and LSU DT Ricky Jean-Francois. In May 2009, starting CB Walt Harris tore an ACL and the franchise signed Pro Bowl CB Dre Bly. As of this writing, Top Pick WR Michael Crabtree is a holdout of all training camp activities and has not attended any training camp. The 10th pick and his agent feel his talent is worth more than #10 pick money and surprisingly, Coach Singletary (himself a rookie holdout with the Bears) has yet to say much about his #1 pick’s issues with salary.
Look for the 49er’s to get back into the playoffs with a strong coach and supporting staff and a revamped receiving corps if and only if a starting QB can emerge a leader from training camp.
Previous Seasons
The 2008/09 49ers team that was fielded should have made an impact in the league. The team resigned Shaun Hill to a three-year deal, added free agents Justin Smith, J.T. O’Sullivan and Issac Bruce. The acquisition of QB O’Sullivan was an insurance policy in case Alex Smith could not fully recover from a separated shoulder suffered in game four of the 07/08 season. On October 20 of 2008, the franchise severed ties with Head Coach Mike Nolan and promoted Assistant Head Coach Mike Singletary to the HC position. The former Bears Hall of Famer would lead his team to a 5-4 record and management was confident they found their man in Singletary. At the conclusion of the season, Offensive Coordinator Mike Martz was fired.
The Niners were the critics favorite in 2007/08 – as is the case when a team goes from rubbish to most improved. The positive changes are credited to Mike Nolan, who’s done a great job rebuilding the franchise. 49ers fans are hoping their “It” team lives up to the hype - and tickets for this exciting season are going fast! The 49ers offence has the potential to be a force this year, in spite of their defense remaining a bit suspect. They have a strong QB in Alex Smith, if he stays healthy, and a key RB in Frank Gore. On the DL Aubrayo Franklin was a smart buy, and as LB Brandon Moore is proving to be a monster. For ’07-’08, it looks like San Fran is “It” for valid reasons.
After last season’s debacle of just slipping away from going 0-16 the San Francisco 49ers knew they had to make some moves to improve their sinking franchise to get them to start buying 49ers tickets once again.
In the off-season, they did fill some holes in their team, but they didn’t make any sort of a big splash in the free agent market this past spring. One of their bigger moves that they did make was picking up former Buffalo Bills left tackle Jonas Jennings. Jennings, who is entering his fifth season in the NFL, will be able to take care of the blind side of their signal caller and will also prove to be very valuable in the run game as well. Their other big pickup was former Ravens defensive end Marques Douglans who should help them sure up their defensive front. The team also picked up offensive lineman Eric Heitmann to help out the rest of the offensive line, which could be very porous at times last season.
The 49ers were so bad last year that they got the dubious honor of having the number one pick in the NFL Draft. There were a number of viable options, but in the end the 49ers selected Utah quarterback Alex Smith. Smith was fresh off of leading his team to a 35-7 Fiesta Bowl victory over Big East champion Pittsburgh. He was thought to be the top quarterback in the draft. He wasn’t slotted as the best talent in the draft, since there was a number of amazing running backs that were selected in the first round. It just so happened to be that the quarterback position was the 49ers greatest need.
Smith is your prototypical quarterback. He leads vocally, in addition to by example, and is an extremely hard worker on the field, in the film room and in the weight room. He has a type of understanding for the game that went unparalled in this year’s quarterback class. In addition to having a strong, accurate arm, Smith is also a great scrambler. No one is going to confuse him with the Flacon’s Michael Vick, but he has above average speed and tends to be very tough when he has to tuck the ball and run.
Their next two picks were spent on Michagan center David Baas and Miami (FL) running back Frank Gore. Both players come from strong programs where they were leaned on to lead the team both on and off the field. Gore might end up challenging Current starting running back Kevan Barlow for playing time. These three players are the future of the San Francisco 49ers, especially Smith and fans will have a reason to run to the box office and buy 49ers tickets once again.
