2011 San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers are looking break a streak of eight season playoff drought and after releasing Mike Singletary after a 6-10 record. The team promoted Trent Baalke to the GM position and then hired Stanford Head man Jim Harbaugh for the head coaching position. In addition to Harbaugh, the team also has a new defensive coordinator in Vic Fangio. Not only is Harbaugh changing the offense to a West Coast Hybrid, but the defense is switching from 4-3 to a modified 3-4 even as rumors abound of the team going back to the 4-3 defense of 2007.
In the draft, the team’s first round selection of DE Aldon Smith has not panned out as well as the coaching staff had hoped. After beginning preseason on a roll, he has since been relegated to a situational pass rusher during the season. QB Colin Kaepernick will have time to adjust to the Pro game this season but may be looked to lead the team in the near future. The team is especially pleased with RB Kendall Hunter who should earn the backup spot behind Frank Gore and 7th round pick FB Bruce Miller, who has successfully transitioned from DE to FB and should make the squad behind Moran Norris.
Look for the 49ers to have another 6-10 season while the team adjusts to the new offense and defense. Harbaugh was hired to coach for at least three years and it should be around year two that anything really changes in San Fran. |
